Hatha Yoga

At Anam, we teach Hatha Yoga - the yoga of asana (postures) and what most people think of when they hear the term yoga. It is one of eight limbs of yoga created by the rishis (sages) of ancient India to help move an individual towards spiritual freedom and enlightenment.

Hatha yoga works deeply with the breath while keeping a strong focus on the alignment of the spine. The postures are typically held for 5-10 breaths which allows the body to learn to move in new ways, creating more space and length throughout and leading to a sense of openness and flexibility.

Lesley works with each person individually, even in a group class setting; she take the time to learn your needs and wants and builds each class from the input of the students.

Many of the students use yoga to treat physical issues such as low back pain, shoulder or neck pain and general tightness, while others find that yoga has eased their mental and emotional concerns such as depression, anxiety, anger and worry.

A Typical Class with Lesley may include:

  • Hamstring stretching, which can help to release low back pain
  • Hip openers allowing for better circulation and a greater sense of well being
  • Balance postures; inviting in and practicing physical balance can help us to attain emotional and mental balance
  • Shoulder and neck release exercises, relieving head aches and stress that is carried in the shoulders
  • Gentle back bends which allow the front of the body to stretch and release tightness while also opening the heart center
