House Hold Cleaners - What is Safe?

Nothing is wrong with wanting to smell nice and have your house and vehicle smell nice also. The problem arises when you choose a synthetic scent over a natural one. Obvious products include perfumes, deodorants, soaps, shampoos, laundry detergents, candles, and cleaning products. The not-so-obvious range from shirts to sports drinks.

Products containing synthetic fragrances are not regulated by any government agency. If a company provides an ingredient label, it need only list the catchall term, fragrance, which is a trade secret protected term, even though hundreds of chemicals may make up one formulation.

The National Academy of Sciences reports that “95 percent of the ingredients used to create fragrances today are … derived from petroleum, including benzene derivatives, aldehydes, and many other known toxins and sensitizers. Many of these substances have been linked to cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders, and allergic reactions.”

The same chemicals that must be disclosed and tested when used in gasoline and cigarettes go completely unregulated when put into your shampoo, your body lotion, your hairspray.

It’s not the smell but the toxicants comprising the scent that are dangerous. An allergic reaction might cause congestion or sneezing, a poison response can include migraines, sinusitis, difficulty breathing, fatigue, hormonal imbalances, and digestive problems. It may be that you suffer with these and do not realize what actually causes your pain and discomfort.

Fragrance toxins silently add stress to our natural detoxification systems The Institute of Medicine categorized fragrances as equal to second-hand smoke for triggering asthma.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO REDUCE YOUR RISK?

  • Do not use a product that has “Fragrance” listed as an ingredient.

  • The terms natural, nontoxic and hypoallergenic are not regulated and have no real meaning on a label - be sure to read the ingredient list.
